No experience required.  If you are an ace farmer or gardener, awesome. If you’ve never stepped on a farm before, awesome. What farming volunteer activities are there?

All kinds! Possible tasks may include weeding, planting, seeding, harvesting, mulching, pest removal, composting, farm maintenance or special projects, and a variety of other tasks. Many, if not all, of these projects, will include walking, lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting, twisting, and sometimes doing a happy dance! Needs change with the season and the 3 weekend mornings is the perfect introduction to try your hand at different farming activities!

What is in a typical volunteer experience with The Backyard Farmer?

Each weekend will focus on a different area of the farm.  Farmer George and Jen will welcome you and have you sign a volunteer waiver. Next, a tour of the farm with a review of the projects for the morning with demonstrations and Q&As. Then we get to volunteering! Breaks are taken so there’s plenty of opportunity to hydrate and get to know each other. At the end of each morning, there’s time to wrap up, put back tools and share accomplishments and ideas.

What should I wear to volunteer?

Dress for the weather. We recommend wearing casual clothes you don’t mind getting a little dirt on. Long pants and long-sleeved shirts are encouraged as these protect your skin. Closed toe shoes are required for safety.

Do I need to bring anything to volunteer?

A prefilled reusable water bottle to stay hydrated, gardening gloves and most importantly, a smile!

Can I make suggestions or share my own experiences with farming, gardening or animal care?

Absolutely! If fact sharing what you know and suggestions to improve life on the farm is encouraged, so don’t be shy. We’ll offer plenty of opportunities to all of the volunteers to share ideas during and after each weekend.
